This brief checklist will help you determine your readiness to become a Gold Standard employer. If you can check all or most of the following statements, you may be ready to complete an application.

Tobacco Use

…the number one cause of cancer and the number one cause of preventable death throughout the world

  • Our workplace is completely tobacco-free (not just smoke-free) indoors and outdoors.
  • We cover, at either no cost or at a reasonable cost-sharing level, evidence-based tobacco-cessation treatments including prescription (Rx), non-prescription over-the-counter (OTC) products and counseling for employees and their covered dependents.
  • We sponsor tobacco-cessation programming, in our workplace, such as a quit line, seminars or onsite support groups.

Nutrition

…most cancers are linked to a few controllable factors – tobacco use, poor diet and lack of exercise

  • We value, support and promote healthy food choices.
  • We provide our employees access to healthy weight and/or nutrition programming.
  • Our employees describe our organization’s culture as one that supports healthy eating habits.

Physical Activity

…about one third of cancer deaths are related to overweight or obesity, physical inactivity and poor nutrition, and therefore could be prevented

  • We value, support and promote physical activity.
  • We provide our employees access to opportunities for physical activity.
  • Our employees describe our organization’s culture as one that supports being physically active.

Prevention, Screening & Early Detection

…regular screenings may prevent cervical and colorectal cancers…and can detect cancers of the breast and certain other organs at early stages …and early detection has been proven to reduce mortality

  • We communicate the importance of screening for certain cancers to our employees.
  • Our health benefit plans cover, at either no cost or at a reasonable cost-sharing level, screening services for breast, colorectal and cervical cancer and all FDA-approved vaccines (currently Gardasil and/or Cervarix) for the prevention of cancer.

Access to Quality Treatment and Clinical Trials

…reducing barriers to cancer care is critical in the fight to eliminate suffering and death due to cancer

  • Our health benefit plans include coverage for cancer treatment at Commission on Cancer-accredited programs and/or National Cancer Institute-designated cancer centers.
  • We educate our employees about cancer clinical trials.
  • Our health benefit plans provide coverage for the current standard of care when covered individuals are participating in cancer clinical trials.
